Therapeutic Mammaplasty

What is Therapeutic Mammaplasty?

Therapeutic mammaplasty is a type of breast-conserving surgery that removes breast cancer while reshaping the remaining breast tissue. This procedure is suitable for women with larger breasts, allowing for effective cancer removal while preserving breast appearance.

Indications for Therapeutic Mammaplasty

You may be offered therapeutic mammaplasty if:

  • You have early-stage breast cancer that requires a lumpectomy.

  • You have moderate to large breasts that would benefit from reshaping after tumour removal.

  • You are undergoing breast reduction as part of cancer treatment.

  • You are prepared for potential surgery on the other breast to achieve symmetry.

Surgical Technique

  • The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.

  • The tumour and surrounding tissue are removed while preserving as much of the breast as possible.

  • The remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted.

  • The nipple may be repositioned for a natural appearance.

  • If necessary, surgery on the other breast may be planned later for symmetry.

Post-Operative Care

  • You will be monitored in the hospital for a short stay, usually for a few hours to overnight.

  • Pain relief medication will be provided.

  • You will need to wear a supportive bra for comfort and healing.

  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks.

  • Follow-up appointments will be arranged to monitor healing and discuss further treatment.
