Prosthetic reconstruction following a mastectomy

Breast reconstruction with a prosthesis (implant) is a surgical procedure performed to restore the shape and appearance of the breast following a mastectomy. The procedure involves placing a silicone implant to recreate the breast mound. This can be done either immediately during the mastectomy or in a delayed fashion after the initial surgery.

  • Restores breast shape and symmetry

  • Can help improve self-confidence and body image

  • Less complex surgery compared to autologous (flap) reconstruction

  • Shorter operative time and quicker recovery compared to tissue-based reconstruction

  • No need for additional surgery on other body areas for tissue harvesting
