Breast lift (Mastopexy)
What is a Mastopexy?
Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. It can also reposition the nipple and areola for a more youthful appearance.
Who is a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for a mastopexy if:
Your breasts have lost shape or volume due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or gravity.
Your nipples point downward or are positioned below the breast crease.
You have stretched skin or enlarged areolas.
You are in good health and maintain a stable weight.
You do not smoke or are willing to quit before and after surgery.
Types of Mastopexy Incisions
Depending on the degree of sagging and your goals, your surgeon may use different incision techniques:
Periareolar ("Donut") Lift – Around the areola, best for minimal sagging.
Vertical ("Lollipop") Lift – Around the areola and down to the breast crease, good for moderate sagging.
Anchor Lift – Around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease, ideal for significant sagging.
What to Expect Before Surgery
Consultation: Your surgeon will evaluate your breasts, discuss your goals, and review your medical history.
Pre-Surgery Instructions: You may need to stop smoking and maintain a healthy weight
Mammogram: Some patients may require a mammogram before surgery.
The Surgery
Performed under general anaesthetic.
Takes approximately 2-3 hours.
Will require an overnight stay, very occasionally as a day procedure
Recovery & Aftercare
First few days: Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common; pain medication and supportive bras are recommended.
First 2-3 weeks: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.
6 weeks+: Most swelling subsides, and results start to become visible.
Final results: Can take several months as the breasts settle into their new shape.
Mastopexy with Implants
If you desire fuller breasts in addition to lifting, a breast augmentation with implants may be combined with the procedure.
Longevity of Results
While results are long-lasting, aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can affect breast shape over time. Maintaining a stable weight and wearing supportive bras can help prolong results.
